Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about our DBT skills classes.

How are class conducted?

Classes are live, online, conducted over Zoom on a set schedule.

Are there rules governing participation?

Student should prepare join class from a private, quiet space. It is best to use a computer, but if you use your phone or a tablet you’ll need to prop the device or use some sort of holder (because if you’re holding the device it will move around a bit and be too distracting for others). You cannot be in a public place (out of respect for the privacy of your classmates), or driving (as this is both distracting and unsafe). Try to keep your camera on, but turn it off if you need to run to the restroom or get snack. Use the “raise hand” feature if you have a question or would like to share. Finally, you should keep yourself muted unless you are speaking.

Do I have to attend every class?

Like any class, you sign-up and pay for an entire course. We encourage you to attend every class. The skills do tend to fit together, and build on each other, so if you miss too many it will limit how helpful the skills will be for you. However, your attendance is ultimately up to you.

Where are the mindfulness classes?

One of the core DBT skills, mindfulness is integrated into all courses we offer. We occasionally offer more advanced seminars on mindfulness, so you can further develop this important DBT skill.

What is your refund policy?

If you’re not certain if our DBT classes are right for you, please contact us with any questions prior to registering for a course. Withdrawing or no-showing after a course has begun can be distracting to the other students. We are not generally able to offer refunds after a course begins. If a rare exception applies, there will be a fee (to cover the payment processing charges).

Do I have to reveal personal info or talk about myself in front of strangers?

No. Our DBT classes are not like “process groups.” You can talk about yourself some if you feel comfortable. For example, you may decide to share an insight you had, or tell the class how you applied a specific technique in your life. As in any class, you may be asked to discuss a certain topic, or talk about how you completed your homework. However, you always choose how much you feel comfortable participating, and how much you want to reveal.

Is the information shared confidential?

We ask all class members to agree to not share information shared outside of class, and any kind of recording is strictly prohibited. Since this is not therapy, client-therapist confidentiality does not apply. However, we ask our instructors to maintain confidentiality to the extent possible, and we take your privacy very seriously.

Students choose what name they want to display during the class meetings, and we cannot override their choice, but we suggest they include their first name and the first letter of their last name.

Do you offer training for professionals that want to learn how to be DBT therapists?

No, we do not offer professional training. For professionals wanting training in DBT, check out BTechPortland DBTPsychwire, or TIC. For information on certification requirements check out DBT-LBC.
