DBT Skills for
Friends and Family
Returns January 22nd, 2025
In our DBT Skills for Friends and Family course, we offer education and skills for persons who love someone with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), BPD traits, or other issues of strong emotions.
This course is designed for spouses, parents, adult-children, friends, and anyone who loves someone with strong emotions. In this course, you’ll learn skills to help you better interact with your loved one, reduce conflict, promote your own well-being, and better understand emotion dysregulation.
How can DBT Skills for Friends and Family help me?
Living with or loving someone borderline personality disorder (BPD), severe depression, and other issues of strong emotions can be very difficult.
Often, it can seem like everything you try just makes things worse. If you are struggling to maintain an important relationships but find yourself frustrated over and over, we might be able to help.
The skills we teach in this course provide a new way of relating, probably very different than what you have tried before.
-
If you’re seeking help, chances are the why you have been relating to your loved one just isn’t working. We can offer an alternative, counter-intuitive approach to interpersonal relationships and how to interact with people that is more likely to get you what you want. Balancing competing needs can be hard- do we prioritize the relationship, or our self-respect? How should we respond when someone is hurtful? How do we make sure we aren’t unintentionally reinforcing bad behavior? By changing the way you think about and relate to people, we can offer a better way.
-
Often, our own emotions get in the way of being effective. When others engage in hurtful or scary behavior, how do we maintain our cool? How do acknowledge and validate your own emotions, without letting them control you? In this course, you’ll learn both short and long term strategies to regulate your emotions, and stay effective.
-
There will always be some difficult things you can’t change. Some events can’t be undone, some people are unlikely to change, and some problems just can’t be fixed. Learning to spot, and then accept, that which we cannot change is a valuable skill, that can help you become “unstuck” from old patterns, and unburden you from impossible goals that only lead to disappointment.
